PROGRAM OVERVIEW IN “THEIR WORDS”

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre at UWSP is one of the only in the Midwest that integrates the study of acting, dance, and voice. The program is designed to create a rigorous and comprehensive series of courses that prepare students to pursue a professional career in musical theatre. Disciplined and talented students receive excellent training and multiple performance opportunities in a strong liberal arts setting. Admittance to the program is by audition only.

Students studying Musical Theatre at UWSP will enroll in stimulating pre-professional classes. The courses focus on the development and investigation of performance techniques.

Song

  • One ballad, one up-tempo, one minute each
  • One written before 1965, appropriate for age, vocal range, personality.
  • If you are auditioning in NYC or Chicago, you will need to provide recorded accompaniment of your songs on an iPod or other similar device, sound equipment will be provided to connect to the headphone jack of your device, you may use your own sound equipment if you prefer
  • If you are auditioning in Stevens Point an accompanist will be provided or you can bring your own. You may also choose to use prerecorded accompaniment

Monologue

  • One contemporary monologue, one minute or less

Dance

  • Those auditioning on campus at UW – Stevens Point will participate in a group dance audition
  • Wear clothes in which you can move freely. Tap shoes are not required. A time to change from prepared audition dress will be provided
  • There will not be a dance audition at the off campus locations

OUTSIDE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

  • Players Student Artistic Alliance is a group that coordinates trips to see shows in Appleton, Minneapolis and Chicago. The group mounts student-designed and directed productions and produces “Spotlight” performances that give majors the chance to share original work with their peers.
  • The department also participates in the American College Theatre Festival and has sponsored productions that have toured and successfully competed in regional festivals.
