PROGRAM OVERVIEW IN “THEIR WORDS”

Theater is a universal expression of spirit. Our faculty of working professionals believes that practical training and hands-on experience, combined with the breadth and rigor of liberal arts study, offer our graduates the best individualized preparation for a life in the theater. Using both historical and contemporary training in the craft, and providing collaborative opportunities that apply skills to live production, new works, and new media, we prepare our students for a complex and challenging future, regardless of where their training may lead them.

Mason Theater students are self-directed. The School of Theater offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Theater and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Stage and Screen Studies. Our concentration areas include Performance, Design and Technology, Theater Education, Playwriting and Dramaturgy, and Musical Theater. All students take courses in theater history, literature and criticism, acting, directing, script analysis, design aesthetics, and technical theater, in addition to choosing electives from area specialties. Students earn credit working on Mason Players productions, and on approved projects found in our professional theater community. They can also pursue graduate studies in Theater Education and Arts Management and take advantage of selected graduate opportunities in other concentration areas.

Whether they plan to enter the professional theater, seek teacher certification, or pursue graduate studies, our students learn to solve problems creatively, think critically, write clearly, and express themselves artistically, as they build a strong work ethic and deep sense of artistic responsibility.
