PROGRAM OVERVIEW IN “THEIR WORDS”

Boasting three outstanding theatres, production shops, production facilities and post-production laboratories, state of the art equipment, and a faculty made up of working professionals, the School of Theatre, Film & Television at the University of Arizona provides an exciting opportunity to learn about the art and craft of story telling and the workings of the entertainment industry in an incredibly rich learning environment. Professional screenings like “I Dream in Widescreen,” and our professional theatre training company, Arizona Repertory Theatre, provide real, hands-on creative opportunities and experiences to practice your craft. LIVE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Sing two contrasting musical theatre songs

  • One ballad
  • One uptempo
  • One should be from contemporary theatre repertoire that reflects recent styles
  • The second piece should come from a musical written before 1965
  • Each song should be 16 bars (approximately 45 seconds each)
  • An accompanist will be provided in Tucson only
  • Bring your music in the key in which you will be singing, printed (double-sided), hole-punched in a binder.

For the Los Angeles auditions, please bring your own CD or digital MP3 player.

One monologue

  • No more than one-minute in length
  • From a published work of contemporary realism (no stand-alone monologue collections will be accepted)
  • Age appropriate
  • No dialect, costumes or props.

Dance audition

  • A short combination will be taught
  • Wear dance/exercise wear that is comfortable to move in and flattering to the body

All Musical Theatre applicants auditioning in Los Angeles or cities other than Tucson are required to submit a video file of 45-60 seconds of dance, in whatever  discipline you are most comfortable. If you send a TAP sample, you MUST ALSO include a ballet or jazz sample.

  • Linda D. Barzilai & Elias Barzilai Musical Theater Memorial Endowment
    For students in Musical Theatre with financial need.
  • Dr. Irene F. Comer Scholarship
    For outstanding students majoring in Musical Theatre.
  • Sally, Ralph & Susan Duchin Theatre Arts Scholarship
    For undergraduate Acting & Musical Theatre students based on merit. Preference is given to Arizona Repertory Theatre company members.
  • Lois M. Graesser Scholarship
    For an outstanding student majoring in Musical Theatre.
  • James P. & Shirley O’Brien Scholarship
    For students in Musical Theatre, for production of musical theatre and/or upper-division students in musical theatre.
  • Saddlebrooke Performing Arts Group Scholarship
    For students who have achieved senior status who are working toward a degree in Musical Theatre and hold a minimum 3.0 GPA.
