PROGRAM OVERVIEW IN “THEIR WORDS”

The School of Music and the Department of Theatre & Dance offer an Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Certificate in Musical Theatre, drawing from the resources of each department to present the breadth of coursework and performance experience necessary for students to have a fundamental experience in this field of study. An audition is required for entry into the program.

PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

WALLACE BRIGGS SCHOLARSHIP

One-year $1,000 awards are given to deserving freshman at the end of the fall semester who show commitment to the art and craft of theatre, are actively involved in the department, and have demonstrated creative and distinguished contributions to the department’s production program. Mr. Briggs was the first chair of the Department and the Briggs Theatre was named for him in 1986.

WALLACE AND OLIVE BRIGGS SCHOLARSHIP

Four-year scholarship, $1,000 per year ($4,000 total), is available to an entering outstanding freshman and is awarded at the end of the fall semester. It was endowed by Mr. & Mrs. Briggs upon their passing.

JOHN AND RUTH KOCH SCHOLARSHIP

One-year $1,000 awards are given to 1-2 entering freshman in the spring semester for demonstrated potential in acting. This scholarship recipient will be chosen by the Department of Theatre & Dance faculty. The Koch’s came to Lexington as Donovan Scholars and attended all the Guignol plays.

CHARLES HAYDEN LAMPE SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 scholarship is awarded to a sophomore who holds an overall GPA of 3.0 and demonstrates a desire for a professional theatre career. This award is made in memory of Sophomore Theatre student Hayden Lampe.

LOLO ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 scholarship is available to juniors and seniors who show evidence of commitment to all aspects of our departmental programs. Mrs. Robinson, an actress, teacher, and business manager, was one of the first directors of the Guignol Theatre in the 1930’s.

RAYMOND A. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 scholarship is awarded to juniors and seniors who, through their commitment and active involvement in the Department, have demonstrated creative and distinguished contributions to the department’s programs. Awards are heavily based on need. Ray was one of Lexington’s premiere patrons of the arts and taught in the Department from 1961-1989.

CFA THEATRE & DANCE SCHOLARSHIP

CFA Theatre & Dance Scholarships can be awarded to incoming or current students who qualify based on the guidelines laid out by the College of Fine Arts, and who have demonstrated a commitment to theatre and/or dance.

The CFA Theatre & Dance Scholarships are available to full time declared majors OR minors with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.  Full time status is defined as a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester, and a cumulative minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANTSHIP

This $500 award is given to students who have demonstrated their skill and commitment to one of the technical areas of theatre.  Recipients of this award, selected each semester, are required to work in either the Costume Shop or the Scene Shop.  Each shop supervisor determines the required schedule with the awardee.

CHRISTOPHER MAIER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – BY NOMINATION

This award of up to $1,000 is made to one theatre major at the end of the spring semester based upon student and faculty nominations. The recipient should exhibit a passion for theatre, generosity of spirit, a caring attitude towards all, and a zest for life. This scholarship was established in Junior Theatre student Chris Maier’s memory by his family, fraternity and friends.

MARY A. STEVENSON SCHOLARSHIP – BY FACULTY NOMINATION

This scholarship is available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who demonstrate talent and desire for a career in the area of costume design and technology.  Nominations can be made by Theatre & Dance faculty only. Stephenson was the costumer for the Department from 1968-1996.

OUTSIDE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Students who are accepted in the Musical Theatre Certificate Program are encouraged to audition for and participate in the annual Department of Theatre and Dance Musical, School of Music’s “It’s a Grand Night for Singing”, and National Summer Stock opportunities to enhance their skills. In addition, UK Choristers produces a musical review each year that features Broadway/Musical Theatre repertoire.
